Serious question, how do you actually know if a local volunteer group is doing good work?

I've been giving a few hours each week to a group that picks up litter in our park. Last Saturday, the park manager pulled me aside and said, 'You know, we have a city crew that does this every Monday, and your bags are often in the way.' I felt pretty dumb. I just assumed picking up trash was always helpful. Has anyone else had a volunteer effort backfire because you didn't check in with the people already doing the job?

Wait, the city crew does it every Monday and your bags from Saturday are in the way? That’s a serious lack of communication from the group leader. Someone should have checked the park’s schedule before setting up the clean-up day.

Talk about a classic case of good intentions making more work. That park manager must see this all the time. It's not just about doing a thing, it's about doing it the right way so you're not messing up the system already in place. You gotta call the city or the park office first, ask what they need and when they do it. Otherwise you're just moving the trash from the ground into a bag that becomes someone else's problem.

Yeah @jamie130, that's just bad planning from the top, lol.
