Rant: the town Facebook group found my neighbor's lost dog in 2 hours, the flyers I hung took 3 days
My neighbor's beagle got out through a gate that didn't latch right about a month ago, and I offered to help. I printed 60 flyers at the library and stapled them to every pole within a mile of our block in Rochester, which took me most of a Saturday. Nothing for three days. Then his daughter posted one photo in the neighborhood Facebook group and a woman two streets over commented within 20 minutes that the dog was in her yard. He was home by dinner. What got me was the group had over 1,800 members and people actually watch it, while my flyers were getting rained on and thrown out. I'm not saying stop making flyers, older folks still read them, but I wasted my whole weekend on the slow way. Curious what other people do for lost pets around here, is there a better setup than just the big group page?
Did the flyers actually do nothing though, or did they just work slower because they're a backup instead of the main thing? I hang flyers too but I always do it after posting online, not instead of, because the two reach totally different people and you never know which one gets lucky. That woman two streets over might have walked past your flyer the same day and not put it together until she saw the photo, so your weekend might not have been wasted at all. The real lesson is the order, post first since it costs you ten minutes, then hang flyers while you wait, and honestly get the dog's microchip updated and tag with your cell on it so a stranger can just call you straight away. Sixty flyers is also a lot for one neighborhood, I'd rather hit the busy corners, vet offices, and the two main roads people actually drive, quality over covering every pole.
