Rant: I signed up to hand out food at the shelter, and nobody showed me how anything worked
I put in 4 hours at the River Street shelter last Saturday because they said they were short on help, but I got pointed at a table of cans with zero instructions. Turns out the regular guy who runs the pantry was out sick, so I guessed at the sizes and gave one family way too much rice and another almost nothing. How do you all handle training new volunteers when the one person who knows the system is gone?

Four hours with zero training is wild. The regular guy being out sick should not leave everyone guessing on portion sizes, that is a basic thing the shelter should have written down somewhere. I used to help at a food bank and we had a simple sheet taped to the wall with how much each family got based on size, took two minutes to read. If one person is the only one who knows the system, that system is broken. Somebody there needs to make a one page cheat sheet so this never happens again. Sorry you got thrown in like that, sounds stressful for you and the families.
