Pro tip: the cashier at the hardware store fixed my whole drywall plan in 2 minutes flat

I was grabbing joint compound at Ace Hardware on 14th Street and complaining to the cashier about my patch job cracking again. He told me I wasn't using paper tape on the seams and that mesh tape was for cowards, and walked me through the whole process right there at the register. Anyone else ever get handed free wisdom from a random stranger that made you feel like you'd been doing everything backwards?

Did that guy happen to look like he'd been drywalling since before you were born?

Hold up, wait. "Drywalling since before you were born?" That's insane. Are you telling me this guy was still working mud and tape like it was 1987? I mean, if he walked in with a beat-up taping knife and the same drywall dust in his truck from the Reagan administration, I'd probably believe it.
