Overheard a guy at the hardware store lecturing his kid about how to help people

I was in the plumbing aisle at Lowes on Tuesday and this dad told his 10 year old son "help means doing the part nobody wants, not the fun part." Kid was whining about carrying tools versus just watching him fix a toilet. Made me think about all the volunteer work I've half-assed over the years just to feel useful. Anybody else ever realize they were showing up for the credit and not the dirty work?

That "help means doing the part nobody wants" really hit me. I used to always jump on the fun parts of group projects or volunteering and leave the boring cleanup for everyone else. What really turned it around for me was when I started asking people what specific thing they hated doing, and just started doing that first without being asked.
