Just realized my neighborhood's little free library went from 5 books to 40 in 4 months, and I can't tell if that's a good thing
I walk past the little free library on Elm Street in my town every morning with my dog, and back in March it had maybe 5 beat up paperbacks and a cracked spine copy of some diet book. Now there are easily 40 books in there, stacked two deep, and half of them are actual newer stuff like mystery novels and kids books. I started paying attention because my neighbor Carla said she was going to start restocking it herself after she saw it empty one weekend, and she's been putting in like 3 or 4 books a week since spring. But here's where I'm torn, some people say this is exactly what community help should look like, one person just quietly doing the thing, and others say it's a sign the official library branch on 5th is failing people so badly that we're patching it ourselves with our own cash. I counted 12 books in there last Tuesday that still had thrift store price tags on them, so somebody is spending real money on this. Is this a win for the neighborhood or a band aid on something bigger that we should actually be fixing?
