Hot take: the Thursday night shifts at our soup kitchen in Dayton are the most underrated volunteer slot
I signed up for a Thursday slot at the St. Vincent kitchen on Keowee last week because they were short 3 people, and it turned out to be the calmest night I have worked all season. Only 42 meals went out instead of the usual 120 on Saturdays, so I actually got to sit and talk with folks instead of just slinging trays for two hours straight. The guy running it, Marcus, said he has been trying to fill Thursdays for 4 months with zero luck. Does anyone else's spot have a night nobody wants, and what did you do to get people in the door?
Volunteered at a food bank in Columbus one Tuesday and it was the same deal, dead quiet, maybe 20 people all night. The weird part was the regulars actually seemed bummed when it got busy because they couldn't chat as much. Maybe lean into that and pitch it as the chill shift where you actually get to know people.
