Had a talk with my elderly neighbor Mr. Chen and he said something that hit different about community volunteering

He told me he's been delivering Meals on Wheels every Tuesday for 22 years because nobody asked him to, and now I'm wondering what small consistent thing I could do that actually matters - anyone else have a neighbor who made them rethink their own habits?

Oh gosh, that's such a great story about Mr. Chen. I just have to gently push back on that study thing though - from what I've seen, the research on volunteering and mood is real but it's more about consistency than the exact number of minutes. Some people get a lot out of 10 minutes, some need closer to 30 for it to click. Your mileage may vary on that. But the core point about showing up regularly is totally solid.

Oh man, this hit me right in the chest! I actually just read something last week about how people who do small weekly acts of kindness live longer and feel more connected - like it's not about the big gestures but the rhythm of showing up. Mr. Chen sounds like a gem. I think the trick is picking something so small you can't talk yourself out of it, you know? Like maybe spending 10 minutes picking up trash on your block every Wednesday morning, or baking one extra batch of cookies for the fire station. I read this study that said even 15 minutes a week of helping others boosts your mood way more than doing a big thing once a year. It makes me want to ask around and find out what little thing is already broken in my neighborhood that I could just quietly fix.

Started picking up litter on my street every Sunday morning, now three neighbors joined me without me even asking.
