Found out my local food bank serves over 400 meals a day from a tiny storefront
I was dropping off some canned goods at the place on Maple Street yesterday and the volunteer told me they average 420 meals a day, every day. That number really hit me, especially since the building looks so small from the outside. It makes me wonder if direct donations are actually better than big charity drives, or if the drives bring in more overall. What's the most effective way to help a group like that?

Wow, that's a huge number for such a small spot. It really makes you think about what they actually need day to day. Like, are they drowning in canned beans but have no pasta or cooking oil? I'd be tempted to just call and ask them, "hey, what's the one thing you're completely out of right now?" Maybe the most effective thing is just giving them cash so they can buy exactly what runs out first.

Wait, 500 items a week for a tiny pantry? That's wild. It makes you picture shelves full of green beans but no rice or soap. Calling to ask what they're totally out of is smart. Cash seems like it would fix the weird gaps way faster than another bag of random cans.

It's the same problem with most charity drives, focusing on what's easy to give, not what's actually needed.
