Borrowed a $20 stud finder from a neighbor after my old one died

Spent two hours trying to hang shelves by knocking on walls and making guesses. Turned out the first three spots I picked were all dead zones above the stud shoes. Has anyone else found that even cheap detectors beat the old tap-and-listen method?
