Spent $260 on a used 4 foot prep fridge from a restaurant auction and the compressor died in 9 days
The auction listing said it was tested and working, but there was no way to plug it in before bidding so I rolled the dice. Now I'm out the money plus $80 to haul it off, so has anyone figured out a way to test cooling gear at these auctions without getting burned?

Man, this is the same story as buying a used car without a test drive, and it burns every time. I've noticed that whole auctions and flea markets and "as is" sales all run on the same trick, which is that the seller knows you can't check anything so the risk is all on you. My rule now is if I can't plug it in or run it for a few minutes, I just assume it's dead and price that into my bid, meaning I'd pay scrap value and nothing more. Nine days is brutal though, that's just long enough to feel like you got away with it before it stabs you in the back.
