Hot take: That guy who said commercial hoods don't need annual cleaning was dead wrong
A rep from a vent hood company told me at a show last year that modern systems with baffle filters basically clean themselves. I believed him and skipped my annual service for a year to save $600. Fast forward to last month when the fire inspector did a surprise check and cited me for grease buildup in the ductwork. Now I'm staring at a $1200 fine plus emergency cleaning costs. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from equipment vendors that cost you money?

Wait, did the vendor actually put that "self-cleaning" claim in writing anywhere? Because that sounds like something they should be liable for if they misled you. I'm curious what brand it was, since some of those claims are pure marketing fluff and others are just misunderstood. How did the inspector even find out about the buildup - did they scope the ducts or just see the baffles looking dirty?

Yeah @oliviahenderson you're right, it's like how every gadget now claims to be "AI powered" when it's just a basic timer lol.
