TIL my $400 hydraulic torque wrench quit mid-job on a pipeline tie-in near Beaumont
Last Thursday we were tying in a 12 inch line outside Beaumont when my torque wrench just died halfway through the bolt sequence, no warning, nothing. We had 4 bolts left at 900 ft-lbs and the backup wrench was back at the yard, 40 minutes away. I ended up finishing the sequence by hand with a multiplier bar and a cheater pipe, which took 2 hours and wore me out. Now half the crew is saying I should've waited for the backup and the other half says a hand finish is fine if you watch the marks. What's the call here, would you have waited or pushed through?
