The day my regulator started free flowing at 85 feet in the Mississippi and I had to make a call
Was working a pipeline inspection near Baton Rouge last month, about 85 feet down, water temp around 58 degrees. My primary reg started free flowing out of nowhere, just blasting air. I had a backup on a necklace but my brain froze for maybe two seconds, which felt like ten. I switched to the octo, signaled my tender, and we did a controlled ascent. Problem is, I had maybe 90 seconds of usable gas left in the primary before it would have drained the whole tank. Some guys I've talked to since say they would have just gone straight to the surface from 85, no stops. Others say that's how you get bent and you ride the reg as long as you can while you make your way up slow. I went with the slow ascent and a short safety stop, got checked out fine, but I keep replaying it. The dive sup said I did the right thing but another guy on the crew said I should have just blown to the top. Where do you all land on this, ride it out with the octo and do your stops, or get your ass to the surface and deal with the chamber later?
