Heard a new diver call a Kirby Morgan hat a 'helmet' the other day
It was at a dive school open house in Seattle, and it made me think about how the words we use have changed. Back when I started in the late 90s, everyone I worked with called it a hat, no question. It was just part of the culture. Now, I hear 'helmet' more often, maybe from video games or movies. It's a small thing, but it feels like a piece of the old school way is fading. Anyone else notice these little language shifts over the years?

Totally see that with other gear too. Like nobody says "dial" for a gauge anymore, it's all just screens and displays now. The old terms just kinda fade out with the tech.

My uncle was a commercial diver in the Gulf back in the 80s, and he'd have given you a look for calling it a helmet. It's like how nobody says they're going to "tape" a show anymore, you just set it to record. The specific words get replaced by more general ones from outside the field, and something about the craft gets lost in the wash.
