Was dead wrong about Invincible being overhyped

Honestly, I avoided Invincible for years because I thought it was just another generic superhero comic riding on Walking Dead hype. But last month my buddy at the shop in Portland made me read the first trade, and I got through all 144 issues in like 10 days. The character writing and how Mark's choices actually have real consequences totally won me over. Has anyone else had a series they dismissed that turned out to be legit?

Made the same mistake with Saga actually, let it sit for two years before my brother forced the first hardcover on me. Now I tell people just give it the first arc before you judge it, that's usually enough to tell if it clicks.

Funny how that works, @evan_jenkins. I did the same thing with The Walking Dead, then my neighbor basically threw the first compendium at my face, and now I'm the one trying to force it on everyone.

See I gotta push back on that a bit. I read the first arc of Saga and it never clicked for me, even after everyone told me to stick with it. The art was fine but the story just felt like it was trying too hard to be weird for weird's sake. I gave it two more arcs because people kept saying it gets better and honestly I just found it more of the same. Different strokes and all that, but I don't think forcing yourself through something hoping it'll eventually hit is always the right move. You really think that first arc rule works for everything or just stuff you ended up liking?
