That $200 CGC submission that came back a 9.8 vs the one that got a 7.0

I sent in two copies of the same key issue from my personal collection one came back a 9.8 and the other got a 7.0 with a spine crack I never saw. Is the gamble worth it on modern books or should I just stick to raw copies and save the cash?

Has anyone else had a grader miss a flaw that obvious? I think modern books are a total crap shoot now, I sent in a 2021 variant that I barely touched and got a 9.6, then a beat up newsstand copy of the same book got a 9.8 from the same batch. For me, I'd rather buy raw moderns and keep the grading money for older books where the condition actually matters more.

...and that's exactly why I don't bother with grading modern stuff anymore. I read somewhere that the graders are just overwhelmed with the volume of new books coming in, so they rush through them. @shanegibson is right, it really does feel like a coin flip. I'd rather take my chances with raw copies too and save my cash for the silver age books where a 9.8 actually makes a HUGE difference in value.

Yeah, I read something online about how inconsistent the grading is for modern books now. Totally feel you on that @diana_king, it's like they flip a coin sometimes. I think I'd rather just stick with raw copies for newer stuff too.
