Realized I was bagging my comics wrong after a 2008 issue got damaged

I've been collecting since 2015, always used the cheap Mylar bags and just slid the comic in however it fit. Last month I pulled out an older issue from 2008 and found a crease along the top edge where the bag had folded over. My buddy at the shop said I should always put the comic in with the flap facing the back cover and tape the flap down flat. I never thought about it. Checked my whole long box, about 40 comics had the same fold line forming. Anyone else learn bagging the hard way or am I just slow?

Damn, did your buddy explain WHY the flap matters or just say to do it that way? Cause I always heard it was about the tape pressing into the cover over years, not the fold itself. That crease sounds like it's from the bag being too tight in the box, not the orientation.

Man, that's rough! @ellis.robert makes a good point about the tape, but I had a buddy who learned the hard way too. He stacked his long box with the bags facing every which way and one bag got pinched by the lid. Over like two years the pressure made a line right down the middle of the book, not even the top edge. He said he never even noticed until he pulled it for a grading submission and got it back with a "light crease" note. Now he's crazy about making sure every flap is flat and the bag is snug but not crammed. Sounds like your shop buddy saved you from a way worse headache down the road!
