Rant: I tried to explain the X-Men timeline to my mom and now she thinks I'm in a cult.

I used the 'Days of Future Past' movie as a simple starting point, and after 45 minutes she just stared at me and asked if I needed her to call someone for help.

Starting with 'Days of Future Past' is your first mistake, it's a trap door. Next time just say it's about people with powers who fight sometimes. If they ask for more, you've already lost.

Exactly. I tried explaining the Phoenix Saga to my dad once and he checked out before I finished the sentence. Now I just say it's like a superhero soap opera with better costumes. If they want the deep lore, they'll ask for it. Starting with the complicated stuff just makes people's eyes glaze over.
