Kid at my shop called my long boxes 'vintage storage' and I felt every one of my 43 years
I was digging through the dollar bin at a shop in Bakersfield last Saturday when this kid, maybe 19, watched me pull a stack out of my long box and called it my vintage storage system. I laughed it off, but then he asked me why I don't just keep everything bagged and boarded on a shelf like his collection. I told him I've had those same boxes since 1994, back when my dad drove me to the shop every Wednesday and I'd walk out with four books and a buck left for a soda. What got me was not the joke, it was the fact that he had never held a floppy in a box with 200 others and flipped through them just to smell the newsprint. Everything he owns is a slabbed key or a trade on a shelf, so he never got the part where a long box is basically a diary of what you cared about that year. I still pull out my old X-Men run from that era just to see my awful handwriting on the backing boards. So my question is, do you still keep your books in boxes, or did you move everything to shelves and slabs? And what is the dumbest thing someone half your age has said about how you store your comics?
Man, that story hits hard. I've still got all my books in the same beat up long boxes from high school, and yes my handwriting is on half those boards too. Some kid at a con last year told me my boxes were "quaint" and asked if I was worried about spine ticks, like buddy, I survived the 90s, those books have seen worse. The boxes are the collection, not just the storage.
