I used to buy every variant cover like a fool

Last year I dropped $150 on 5 different covers of one Batman issue thinking they'd be worth something. Now I just grab the standard cover and spend the extra cash on actual good trade paperbacks. Anyone else stop chasing variants once they realized it's just FOMO marketing?

126 selling points for pretty much everything now, not just comics. Walk into any store and half the shelves are filled with special edition, extra fancy, limited time only crap that's just the same product in different packaging. Got a buddy who spent 40 bucks on a special box of cereal that came with a toy inside, then complained it tasted exactly like the 4 dollar bag. It's like they figured out that making a boring thing look rare makes us feel special for buying it. Meanwhile the standard version works just as good and leaves you with money left over for what actually matters.

Oh man, the variant trap got me too. Spent way too much on a Batman/Spawn cover that's just sitting in a box now. It's wild how fast that FOMO fades once you realize it's all just marketing hype.

Solidarity brother, I feel that. Picked up a blank sketch cover variant of something a year ago thinking itd be this big investment piece and now its just taking up space in a longbox next to an old Spider-Man book I bought for no reason. The FOMO is real but once you step back you realize its just them printing more of the same book with a different picture on front and charging double. At least we learned our lesson before dropping real cash on one of those foil hologram covers or whatever they push out next.
