Why does nobody talk about buying a car with no paperwork versus waiting for a clean title?
Three months back I found a 1966 Ford F-100 sitting in a barn outside Utica, NY, and the owner had no title, just a bill of sale from 1994 and a name I couldn't track down. I had $2,800 in hand and walked away, but a buddy says he buys paperless cars all the time and just goes through the bonded title process in his state. One side says a missing title is a huge red flag and you'll fight the DMV for a year, the other side says old trucks change hands like this all the time and the paperwork is just a hassle, not a deal breaker. I keep going back and forth on whether I made the smart call or let a solid project slip away for no real reason. What's the worst title mess you've dealt with, and would you buy a truck with nothing but a handwritten bill of sale?
