Spent 3 months chasing a valve tap on my '68 Cougar that turned out to be an exhaust leak
Thought I needed a full top end rebuild until a guy at the Portland swap meet told me to hold a shop rag over the tailpipe while it idled. Two minutes later the 'tap' was gone and I felt like an idiot, anyone else get fooled by a cheap gasket?

Heard a guy on a car podcast say exhaust leaks mimic valve taps all the time.
