TIL the US spends more on pet food each year than on school lunches for kids
Found this out on a USDA page while looking up something else last week, and it's around $50 billion for pet food versus about $20 billion for school meals. Not saying pets shouldn't eat, but that gap got me thinking about what we actually value. Does that number seem real to you, or am I reading it wrong?
The numbers sound about right from what I've seen. What gets me is how this fits a pattern where we pour money into things that make us feel good in the moment but skimp on stuff that actually builds the future. Just look at how fast people drop $80 on a fancy dog bed while voting down a school bond for new textbooks. Or how a drive-thru coffee habit costs more per month than what some families get for food help. Pet food is a want we buy with our hearts, school lunches are a need we treat like a budget problem. That gap says less about pets and more about who we decide deserves our dollars.
