Suburban zoning used to seem logical to me, then my sister moved back

Three years ago I defended single family zoning as just keeping neighborhoods quiet, but last month my sister tried to find a modest rental near her job in Austin and came up empty at every turn. Watching her burn through savings on a 45 minute commute because multi family housing is illegal in 70% of the city made me flip my stance entirely. How do we get more density in places that were built on the promise of a yard for everyone?

Did you look at any of the newer "missing middle" projects, or is your sister dead set on a classic apartment building? I get that Austin's brutal, but sometimes the townhome or duplex options are hiding in plain sight if you're willing to take a slightly longer bus ride.
