My boss swore by the two-trowel method for thin-set, cost me a whole kitchen floor
He said to spread and then burnish with a second trowel to guarantee coverage on 12x24 porcelain. Took me 3 days instead of 2, and the tile guy who fixed my mess said one pass with a proper notch was fine. Has anyone else gotten stuck following advice from someone who hasn't touched the tools in a decade?

...and that's exactly what happened to me with my bathroom backsplash. My brother in law swore I needed to backbutter every single subway tile plus use a 1/4 inch trowel. I spent an entire weekend on a tiny wall, and the grout lines were all over the place because the tiles kept sliding. The guy who ripped it out just laughed and said a 3/8 notch trowel and straight pull does the job every time. Some folks read one article twenty years ago and think they're the foreman for life. Now I just ask what tools they own before I take any advice.
