Vent: fancy coffee gear won't fix bad beans

I spent 3 months chasing the perfect shot with a $600 espresso machine and a $200 grinder. Then I grabbed a $12 bag of single origin from a roaster in Portland and it tasted like a completely different drink. The gear just reveals what the beans already are. Has anyone else wasted money on equipment before realizing the bean matters more?

Hold up wait wait wait. Are you actually telling me there are people out here spending $200 on single origin Ethiopian beans and then putting them through a $30 blade grinder from Target? That is genuinely wild to me. I feel like that's the coffee equivalent of buying a Ferrari and then filling it up with the cheapest gas you can find. How do you even taste anything through all that dust and uneven grounds?
