That gas station off Route 9 near Poughkeepsie pulls better espresso than the fancy cafe on Main
Stopped at a Sunoco on Route 9 outside Poughkeepsie to fill up before a 6am job and figured I'd grab a coffee out of habit. The machine behind the counter was a plain old push-button deal, nothing fancy, but the guy working it pulled me a shot of espresso that was smooth and had actual flavor, not the burnt rubber taste I expected. I asked him what the deal was and he said they clean the group head twice a day and he weighs the grind, which honestly is more than the barista at the $5 cafe on Main does. I've been back 3 times now and it's been good every single time, which bugs me more than it should. I keep spending $4.50 at the place with the chalkboard menu and the fancy pour-over rigs and half the time it tastes like hot water with a hint of ash. Meanwhile this guy charges me $1.75 and it's the best shot I've had in Dutchess County. Has anyone else found their best cup in the most random spot, or am I just getting lucky here?
