Showerthought: a barista in Portland poured my espresso over a spoon and now I can't go back to guessing
I was at a small cafe on Alberta Street in Portland two weeks ago and the barista asked if I wanted to watch her pull the shot. She set a spoon upside down over the cup and poured the espresso over it, then lifted it slowly to see how the crema settled. That little trick told her within 5 seconds if the grind was off before she even tasted it. I tried it at home on my old Gaggia and caught a bad batch of beans I would have blamed on my machine. Does anyone else use the spoon test, or is there a better way to check a shot without pulling a second one?
