Noticed a bunch of people at my local shop using stale beans

I watched a guy grab a bag of coffee with a roast date from three months ago and the shop owner didn't say anything, which seems like a big miss when you're paying $18 a pound for something that should be used within two weeks.

Right, saw some three month old bags sitting there last week and just walked out.

Is the shop trying to save on electricity by not refrigerating those old beans, @angela43?

Last month I found some roasted beans at Daily Grind that were four months past the roast date. I asked the barista about them and she said they keep them out on purpose for people who want a darker flavor. I grabbed a bag and honestly they made a decent cold brew at home. So sometimes it's not about saving electricity, it's about what they think some customers want.
