My pour over technique was a mess for almost a year before I figured it out

I kept getting coffee that was either way too sour or super bitter, no matter what I tried. The problem was my grind size, but I was convinced my cheap grinder just couldn't do it. After about 10 months of bad cups, I finally tried a friend's better grinder and the difference was huge. So, is it more about the skill and patience to dial in what you have, or is having the right gear from the start the real key?

Read an article once that said good gear just makes the process less frustrating. A bad grinder can fight you every step of the way, even if you know what you're doing. Getting decent stuff lets you actually learn the skill instead of guessing.

Totally true. My first grinder was a cheap blade thing. Could never get a consistent pour. Upgraded to a basic burr grinder and it was like night and day. Finally saw what changing the grind size actually did.
