Hit 500 pounds of whole beans roasted in my home setup this morning
I was just tallying up my roasting log for the year and realized I've gone through exactly 500 pounds of green coffee since I started roasting at home. That number blew my mind because I never thought I'd stick with it this long. Anybody else track their roast totals and get surprised by the cumulative weight?

Wait, didn't you mean 500 pounds of green beans though? Roasted beans would have lost like 15-20% of their weight in moisture, so that's a bigger number than you think.

Huh, actually that works the other way around. Green beans weight more than roasted because they still have that moisture in them. So if you start with 500 pounds of green, after roasting you'd end up with around 400-425 pounds of roasted beans. The weight loss is from water steaming off, not from the beans shrinking in some other way. So 500 pounds of roasted beans would have started as maybe 600 or more pounds of green, which is a much bigger pile of raw material.
