My cousin's 'just use the simplest tool' advice backfired in a funny way

My cousin told me to stop overthinking and just use the simplest tool for my first Python script. So I used a basic text editor instead of an IDE, thinking I was being smart. Spent 3 hours hunting a syntax error that was just a missing quote on line 42. Turns out the editor had zero highlighting, so I kept typing over my own mistake. My cousin laughed when I told him, said he meant use simple code, not a simple editor. Has anyone else gotten advice that sounded good but meant something totally different?
