My coding bootcamp buddy told me to skip the fundamentals

Last year a friend from my bootcamp told me to skip learning HTML and CSS properly and just jump straight into JavaScript frameworks. I followed his advice for about 3 months and ended up completely lost anytime I had to style a page or fix a layout. Spent 2 weeks re-teaching myself the basics before I could even understand what my own code was doing. Has anyone else been given bad advice that set them back instead of helping them move forward?

My buddy Sean over there nailed it. That centering a div joke hits way too close to home because I literally spent 45 minutes trying to figure out why my flexbox wasn't working last week. The whole "skip the basics" mindset is like building a house on a foundation made of toothpicks. You might get the walls up fast but the first real wind is gonna knock everything over. I saw so many people in my bootcamp group who jumped straight into React and then couldn't even tell you what a block element was or how the box model works. They ended up more frustrated than if they just took the time to learn proper CSS from the start.

Bet your bootcamp buddy still can't center a div without stack overflow.
