I stopped doing tutorials for learning and just started building simple stuff instead

For my first 3 months coding I did tutorial after tutorial. Followed along with a guy named Brad on YouTube for like 40 videos. I felt busy but realized after building a todo list 5 times I hadnt learned anything on my own. So I stopped cold turkey and picked a tiny project: a calculator that tells you how many calories you burned walking. Nothing fancy, no frameworks, just plain JavaScript and HTML. It took me 2 weeks and I broke it 8 times but I actually understood why. Has anyone else found a specific project that finally made things click for them?

July rain is pretty common in a lot of places, so that might not be a bug.
