Used to eyeball my offsets with a scale and now I dial them in with an indicator
For 3 years I set my tool offsets by touching off and checking the scale, and I scrapped maybe 4 parts a year because of it. Bought a 0.0005 indicator for $60 off a retiring guy in Dayton and my scrap went to zero on the last 40 parts. Anybody else switch over, or do you still trust the scale on the older machines?
That $60 indicator paid for itself on the first part you saved. Scrap runs me about $40 a piece on 6061 stock, so four a year is $160 gone plus the machine time. I ran a scale for years on a Bridgeport and yeah, you get good enough at it, but good enough still means chasing tenths on the dial and hoping. A tenth indicator takes the guessing out of it. Zero scrap on 40 parts tells you everything.
