Took a basic G-code class and now I'm curious about programming full time

I've been running mills for three years and just finished a night course on G-code. It opened my eyes to how programs are made. Is it worth pushing for a trainee spot in the programming department?

Yeah, learning how the programs actually work changes everything, doesn't it? That worry about layoffs is real, I've seen it happen too. But honestly, having that floor experience plus some code knowledge makes you way more useful. I'd say it's worth asking for a chat with the programming lead.

Look at it from the other side. If you understand the machines and can fix the code when they act up, you keep the line running. That saves money every single shift. Managers notice the person who stops the costly downtime, not just the one who follows the schedule. That kind of value is harder to replace when they start looking at who to let go.

Stick with what you know on the floor. Programming jobs get cut first when orders slow down.
