That $1200 spindle rebuild that wasted 3 weeks of work

Got a used Haas VF-2 from an auction for a good price last fall. Ran fine for about 2 months, then started making this growling noise on heavy cuts. Local repair guy said it was just bearings and quoted me $1200 to rebuild the spindle. Paid it, waited 3 weeks, got it back and it ran great for exactly one shift. Then the same noise came back twice as loud. Turns out the original issue was a bent drawbar, not the bearings. The rebuild guy never checked it because I didn't ask him to. Now I'm out $1200 and still have to buy a whole new spindle assembly for $4500. Has anyone else had a shop miss the real problem during a rebuild? How do you guys vet spindle repair places before handing over cash?
