Shoutout to the old timer at the shop in Dayton who showed me how to indicate a vise on a knee mill
Three months ago I picked up a beat up Bridgeport for my garage shop and I could not get a vise to sit true on it. I was chasing the dial on the back jaw for two hours and getting .008 out, which was driving me nuts. An old timer named Ray at a shop in Dayton watched me fight it and showed me to sweep the fixed jaw and tap the vise with a dead blow while the bolts were just snug. Did it his way and got it under .001 on the first try, felt like cheating. How do you all indicate your vises, sweep the fixed jaw or use a ground bar in the jaws?
Spent my first month sweeping the movable jaw like a dummy and wondering why it kept drifting on me. Sweeping the fixed jaw with the bolts barely snug is the way, that dead blow tap trick saved me from buying a ground bar I didn't need.
