Old timer told me feeds and speeds aren't everything back in 2012, I finally get it

Been seeing too many guys crash tools because they're chasing the perfect chip load off a chart instead of listening to the machine. I ignored that advice for 8 years until I snapped a $400 indexable cutter last month. Anyone else learn that lesson the hard way?

I watched a guy at the shop last year run a 3/4" endmill through some 4140 at 8,000 RPM because the calculator said so. Machine started shaking like it was gonna walk off the stand, and he just kept going. Said the numbers were right. I used to be the same way, trust me. I'd stare at that chip load chart like it was the holy grail. Then I had a 20 pound facemill explode on me during a finishing pass because I was trying to hit a perfect .006 IPT. Felt the whole floor shake. After that, I started backing off a little and listening for the sweet spot. Now I just get close with the chart and let the noise tell me what's up.

Respectfully disagree with listening for the sweet spot though. Ive seen dudes crash machines doing that cause they thought they heard something. The numbers are just a starting point, but if you ignore them completely youre basically guessing.
