Guy at the tool sharpening shop said my feeds are too safe

Was dropping off end mills at Accurate Sharpening in Portland and the old timer there said I'm running 20% slower feeds than he did in the 80s, called it 'pansy programming.' Said the spindle and tooling can handle way more than the manuals suggest, and honestly it made me rethink every part I've babied through for the last 3 years. Anyone else get told they're over cautious on feeds, and did pushing it actually break stuff or just save time?
