Unpopular opinion: community solar gardens are way better than rooftop panels for most people

I compared costs between putting panels on my house in Cleveland versus joining a local solar garden, and the garden was $2,000 cheaper upfront with zero roof worries. Has anyone else found that shared solar makes more sense in older neighborhoods?

hell yeah, same boat here. I'm in a 1920s rowhouse in Baltimore and my roof is a mess of angles and old slate tiles, so rooftop solar was a nonstarter. Signed up for a community garden about a mile away and my first year's savings were $380 plus I didn't have to drill anything into my basically crumbling brick.

I read a study from the National Renewable Energy Lab last year that said community solar can actually serve households with lower credit scores better than rooftop systems, and it stuck with me because my sister tried financing panels and got denied on her credit alone. In older neighborhoods like yours and mine, the shared model also spreads out the maintenance costs across a group, which is huge when you're dealing with a house that already has enough surprises every time you open a wall (trust me, I know). Plus those community gardens usually have wiggle room for lower-income folks to get in on the savings without a huge upfront hit, which is way more fair if you ask me. I’d love to see more cities push for these over pushing everyone to tear up their historic roofs.

You make a good point and I've noticed this same pattern playing out in other parts of life too. The whole system of going solar or making any big upgrade seems to assume you've got perfect credit and a house that's in good shape to begin with. Meanwhile the people who could really use the savings are often the ones stuck with older homes and shaky finances. It reminds me of how grocery stores used to only put healthy food in rich neighborhoods and leave the rest of us with convenience stores. These shared models feel like they level the playing field a little bit by not asking everyone to jump through the same expensive hoops.
