Took me 3 months to realize my heat pump was short cycling from a dirty filter

I kept hearing this weird clicking sound outside and my energy bill went up like $45 last winter. Thought it was a refrigerant leak or a bad compressor so I had a guy come out twice and he couldn't find anything. Finally sat down and watched the thing cycle on and off like every 4 minutes instead of running normally. Turned out the filter was so clogged it was choking the airflow and the system kept thinking it was overheated. $12 filter and 10 minutes later the thing runs like new. Has anyone else had a simple fix hide from them for way too long?

Honestly, I spent two whole weeks tweaking my thermostat before noticing my cat had somehow nudged the fan setting to 'on'.

Hate it when a pet messes with the settings like that, took me forever to figure out my dog did the same thing. At least you caught it eventually, right?
