The time I forgot to turn off the oven and left for work

Last Tuesday I was running late for my shift and totally spaced on turning off the oven after preheating it for a frozen pizza I never ate. Came home at midnight to a 400 degree kitchen and a utility bill that was $30 higher than normal for the month. Has anyone else dealt with forgetting an appliance and found a cheap way to catch it before wasting all that energy?

“The time I forgot to turn off the oven” really got me, because I did the same thing last month but with a crockpot. I left it on low all day while I was at work, came home to a house that smelled like burnt chili and an electric bill I'm still mad about. Since then I got a smart plug for my countertop appliances, it's like $15 and kills power from my phone remotely.

I put a sticky note on the front door. Not fancy but it works.

Yeah the smart plug thing sounded overkill to me at first but honestly that's kinda genius.
