Switched to a rain barrel system last spring and my water bill dropped $40 a month

I set up a 50-gallon barrel off my downspout in Portland and didn't expect it to cover all my garden watering through July, anyone else surprised by how much a simple setup saves?

Jumped on the same setup here in Portland too and yeah it's CRAZY how much water those barrels catch. I added a second 55 gallon barrel linked with a hose and now I'm watering my veggies through August easy. The trick is getting a good diverter so the barrels fill fast but still overflow when they're full. Between the savings and not dragging a hose around, best $60 I ever spent.

Man, that's exactly the kind of thing I've been noticing everywhere lately. It's like once you start paying attention to how much water just runs off your roof during a good rain, you realize how much we're all just wasting it without thinking. Same with food scraps going in the trash or old clothes getting tossed, you know? It's like we set up our whole lives to throw stuff away instead of catching it and using it again. Funny how a little barrel can make you see the whole world different.

Heard my buddy in Seattle got one and said his bill dropped more than he expected.
