Seeing the 2023 Maui fires on the news changed how I think about my own town.

Everyone in my local group talks about cutting our personal carbon footprints, but watching those fires burn made me realize that's not enough. Our town council in Greenville still approves new housing developments without any real wildfire buffer zones. I've started going to meetings to push for stricter land use rules, even though some people say it hurts growth. Has your town updated its building codes for climate risks like that?

Oh "hurts growth", yeah because charred foundations are such a great look for property values. Good on you for going to those meetings, it's like talking to a brick wall that's also on fire.

My last attempt to talk sense into them went about as well as a screen door on a submarine. I showed up with charts and everything, felt like a real expert. They just kept repeating "business friendly" until my eyes glazed over. At this point, I'm just hoping my own house isn't downwind when their brilliant plan goes up in smoke.

Yeah, the "business friendly" wall is real. I had some luck once by asking which specific local businesses they were being friendly to, and how.
