Pro tip: My compost bin in the backyard turned into a complete fly farm last week.
I realized I was adding way too many kitchen scraps without enough brown material, so I mixed in a whole bag of shredded paper from my home office. Has anyone else found a good balance for a small bin in a city yard?

My Brooklyn bin got the same way until I started adding dead leaves.

Shredded paper just makes a wet, moldy mess.

Actually, shredded paper works great if you layer it right. It clumps up when it's wet and alone. You gotta mix it with something dry and bulky, like those dead leaves or even some straw. That lets air in and stops the soggy mess. My pile is mostly paper and it breaks down fine with the right balance.
