Pro tip: I cut my home energy bill by 30% with one cheap fix

Three months ago I got my electric bill and it was $180, way higher than normal. I figured out my attic hatch had no weather stripping, just a big gap letting air escape. I bought a roll of foam tape for $8 at Home Depot and sealed it up last month. My bill dropped to $125 this month without me changing anything else. The house also feels more comfortable, no more cold drafts upstairs. Has anyone else found simple gaps in their house that made a big difference?

Yo WAIT a second here. Nobody's talking about how that attic hatch is basically a fourth wall in your ceiling. I sealed mine and it was wild how much colder the hatch itself felt compared to the ceiling around it. There's also this trick I found where you put a piece of rigid foam board on top of the hatch, like cut it to size and just set it there. Adds another layer of insulation for like $5 because the hatch itself is usually just thin plywood. Check your crawlspace door too if you have one, same deal.

Wait, @riley_price is totally right about the door and window gaps being huge, but the attic hatch is like a secret hole you never think about. I felt the cold air just pouring down from mine before I sealed it. The foam board trick is smart, I just used some leftover weather stripping around the edges and it made a big difference. Crawlspace doors are sneaky too, mine had a gap big enough to stick a finger through.

I actually read somewhere that gaps around doors and windows are the biggest culprits for losing heat. It makes sense that a simple fix like weather stripping could save that much.
