My rain barrel overflowed and flooded the neighbor's yard during that big storm in Portland

Forgot to drill an overflow hole, so it just tipped over and sent 55 gallons of water right into their garden. Anyone know a good way to fix that kind of mess without making it worse?

Drill that overflow hole first, then help them fix the garden.

Ugh, that's rough. I saw a gardening blog say to let the soil dry out completely before you even step on it to avoid compaction. Then you can offer to help them replant anything that got washed out.

Good call on the drill bit, but I have to say letting the soil dry out first is key. If you step on wet dirt after a flood you'll just pack it down hard and the plants won't be able to breathe. Plus, waiting a few days gives you a chance to help them figure out what actually survived before you start digging. Then you can drill that hole and replant in one go.
