My neighbor's simple recycling habit made me feel like a fraud
I was bragging to my neighbor about my solar panels and she just said 'cool, but do you actually check your trash?' I realized I toss recyclables in the regular bin half the time because it's easier. Who else has had that awkward moment where you feel smug about one green thing but skip the basics?

The thing about recycling is that a lot of it ends up in a landfill anyway if it's contaminated or not sorted right. So checking your trash is actually more important than just throwing stuff in a labeled bin. People get caught up in the flashy green moves like solar panels and forget the boring stuff that matters more. Putting a soda can in the regular trash because it's easier does undo a lot of the good from those panels. It's not about being a fraud, it's about doing the daily grind of waste management right. If your neighbor is actually sorting everything properly, she's probably doing more for the planet than you are with your solar setup.

My buddy Mike works at the recycling center in our town. He told me last week about this guy who brings in his bins all proud, but they find like half a pizza box with grease stains or a peanut butter jar with crust stuck to the bottom. That stuff just gets tossed right into the landfill pile because they can't process it. Mike says it's way more common than people think, and the worst part is those folks probably feel great about themselves while actually making more work for everyone. He sees it every single day.
